Amidst the ongoing government Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) modernization program, advocates are pushing for the preservation of the iconic jeepney design in the newly modernized versions, which often resemble "mini buses."

In the feature story of Dapat Alam Mo! by JM Encinas, it was revealed that there is a jeepney manufacturer in Laurel, Batangas, producing modernized jeepneys designed by Jun Calinisan of Glorious Works.

Calinisan's modernized jeepney is a 26-seater version with automatic doors, and a spacious interior, allowing passengers to stand, and provides comfortable seating for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

In addition to being more affordable compared to other modernized jeepneys, Calinisan's products retain the iconic jeepney design. It is also said to adhere to the Philippine National Standard regarding its size and dimensions.

According to Calinisan, customization options for his modernized jeepney depend on the owner or buyer—features such as electric fans or air conditioning, dashcams, and CCTV cameras can be added.

These modernized jeepneys are currently operating in Batangas, costing around P650,000, with the possibility of reaching up to P1.3 million depending on the engine specifications. This is notably lower than the planned imported modern jeepney units from China, priced at P2.6 million.

Several lawmakers are advocating support for local jeepney manufacturers. The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board previously stated that they would not interfere with the choice of brand and model by groups participating in the program.

The Department of Transportation disclosed that 70% of franchises nationwide are currently covered by the PUV modernization program.
