Carlos Yulo has proven that he is still one of the best gymnasts on the planet after bagging the title for men’s vault and had a silver finish for parallel bars in the 2021 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.
AFTER a disappointing performance at the Tokyo Olympics, Carlos Yulo proved that he is still an elite talent after he emerged champion in vault category at the 2021 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships on Sunday in Kitakyushu, Japan.
His gold medal win came just a day after he lost his title defense in the floor exercise category.
The 21-year-old scored an average of 14.916 followed by a 15.033 in his second vault after tallying 14.800 in the first round, featuring three twists before landing.
Yulo successfully bagged two medals, claiming the gold in men's vault and silver in men's parallel bars that add to his growing collection of international titles including his world title in floor exercise in 2019.
Performing one of the hardest elements on vault, he delivered a near flawless performance of Kasamatsu double twist and a Dragulescu that earned him the title.
He surpassed Japan’s Yonekura Hidenobuwho who was relegated to second place with 14.866.
In the parallel bars final, he faced China’s Hu Xuwei who scored 15.466 while Yulo only managed a score of 15.300, for a second place finish.
It was because of a costly penalty that placed him fifth in the floor exercise category.
He unfortunately landed out of bounds in his routine that resulted in a huge 0.3 deduction, forcing him to settle for a score of 14.566.
When asked about his win, the ambitious Olympian is still hungry for the best version of himself.
"I won the gold [on vault] and another achievement for me on the parallel bars, but there is always something more," Yulo told the Olympics website. "I want to reach my full potential as a gymnast."
It was in 2019 when Yulo made history after capturing the Philippines' first ever gold in the world championships.
