Cebu BRT is to be partially operational by 2023 to improve the public transportation system of Metro Cebu.

Representatives from the Department of Tourism's (DOTr) Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project Management Office announced its partial operation by 2023, after such a long delay.

The implementation of the Cebu BRT has been pushed back further as it was supposed to be partially operational in December 2021 and fully operational by 2023, Assistant Secretary Anthony Gerard Gonzales said last year.

However, due to some changes in its design, routes, and road right-of-way (RROW), the implementation had been pushed back.

Engr. Norvin Imbong, OIC of the Cebu BRT Project Management, told the audience during Cebu City’s first Mobility Summit that their new target for the project’s partial operation would be during the fourth quarter of 2023 while the full operation of the project will be at the second quarter of 2025.

Cebu BRT

The Cebu BRT is one of the projects proposed to address Metro Cebu's public transportation issues.

Initially pitched as a stand-alone solution, it later became a component of the Metro Cebu Integrated Inter-Modal Transportation System (MCIITS).

MCIITS is a basket of solutions to address the transportation problems of Cebu. It includes proposals for a cable car and a monorail to provide efficient public land transportation. As a "precursor" to the BRT, the Cebu Integrated Bus Service (CiBUs) was also introduced.

The Department of Transportation started earth balling over 200 trees in its path during the first half of 2022 to signal the start of construction.

The P17-billion bus-based transportation project has also received multi-million-dollar loans from international financial organizations, although only a portion of these funds had been used.

Cebu BRT aims to improve passenger mobility in the province, offer a transport option that is quick, convenient, and affordable, and generate fewer emissions.

As a planned mass transit system for Cebu City, it is located within the greater Cebu Metropolitan Area and is expected to become the first operational bus rapid transit project in the Philippines.
