Carlos Yulo fails to make a back-to-back golden finish at the men’s vault at the World Championship in Liverpool but ended up bagging a pair of silver and bronze medal.
Carlos Yulo fell a bit short of a back-to-back world title as he settled for a silver medal in the men's vault finals of the 2022 World Gymnastics Championships at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, United Kingdom on Sunday night.
The reigning world champion was on his way to a gold medal after an impressive execution of the Ri Se Gwang II (Piked Dragulescu) seeing him take a 15.000, followed by his usual take of the Kasamatsu double full with 14.900 as the grand total.
Yulo held on the lead until Artur Davtyan of Armenia, 2022 Tokyo Olympic Games bronze medalist, finished his routine and garnered a 15.050 to snag the title from the Filipino.
Igor Radivilov of Ukraine followed Yulo and copped the bronze medal with 14.733.
With the second place finish, the Filipino gymnast failed to retain his world title in the vault event after ruling the 2021 edition.
However, Yulo was not quite done bagging medals for the night after going silent in the first few days of the competition where he saw his bid for a podium finish in the floor exercise and all-around to the ground after landing at seventh and eighth place, respectively in the past two days.
Yulo then collected a bronze medal in the parallel bars with a score of 15.366 behind three-time world champion and gold winner Zou Jingyuan of China with 16.166, and silver medalist Lukas Dauser of Germany who garnered a 15.500.
The 22-year-old gymnast will be leaving Liverpool with two medals in the Worlds for the second straight year and will maintain his medal streak of four since his Worlds debut in 2018 in Doha, Qatar.
After his Worlds stint, Yulo is expected to earn a spot for qualification at the 2023 Worlds to be held in Antwerp, Belgium which will serve as a qualifying ticket to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France, followed by the Apparatus World Cup Series from January - March 2024, and then the Continental Championships in April to May 2024.
