Owners of vehicles that were damaged by the fire at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) last Monday can obtain a fire incident certificate from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in order to claim insurance benefits, the management of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) announced.
However, the airport authority made it clear that the MIAA is not at fault for the 19 vehicles that were burned at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.
The BFP is currently conducting an investigation on the cause of the fire.
According to the MIAA, the extension parking lot is operated by Philippine Skylanders Int'l (PSI).
In a letter addressed to MIAA General Manager Eric Ines, PSI stated that it "intends to fully cooperate with it and extend all assistance to the BFP in the conduct of the investigation."
"Solely in the spirit of humanitarian consideration and good faith, PSI shall shoulder all damages incurred by the owners of the vehicles involved. This, however, shall not serve as an admission of fault or negligence on the part of PSI," said Gerard Martin Camiña, a lawyer and PSI VP-GM & Director for legal affairs.
Camiña added that PSI is reaching out to the owners of the vehicles immediately to discuss the details of the company's assistance.
The Terminal 3 extension parking lot, according to MIAA, covers an area of 32,651.73 square meters, with approximately 7,000 square meters taken up by PSI.
The MIAA said the fire spread rapidly due to the strong wind, quickly engulfing the parked cars in the area.
Meanwhile, the Pasay Central Fire Station is examining two perspectives: primarily, the presence of flammable materials in a car that was parked.
Another thing that the BFP is looking into is the burning grass and the explosion, as factors contributing to the fire spreading to the vehicles.
