Despite the persistent downpour brought by Tropical Storm "Aghon" over Metro Manila, the Manila City Government forged ahead with the launch of a fitness promotion program Sunday, May 26, marking the inaugural day by closing a section of Roxas Boulevard.
Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan, Vice Mayor John Marvin "Yul Servo" Nieto, and District 6 Councilor Salvador Philip Lacuna spearheaded the kickoff of the “Move Manila Car-Free Sundays sa Roxas Boulevard” initiative.
City Ordinance No. 9047, crafted by Lacuna, mandated the closure of Roxas Boulevard from Padre Burgos Avenue, near Rizal Park, to Quirino Avenue, to all vehicular traffic from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
This measure aimed to encourage residents to engage in jogging, running, cycling, and even zumba marathons along one of Manila’s prominent thoroughfares.
Participants immersed themselves in an energetic zumba performance, led by celebrity coaches Jim and Toni Saret.
Following the lively dance session, officials and attendees took to jogging along the closed road, braving the rain.
Despite being soaked, Lacuna-Pangan and her companions persevered, clad in their fitness attire, jackets, caps, and dri-fit shirts.
The event, which drew an estimated crowd of 3,000 participants, concluded around 7:40 a.m., as reported by the Manila Police District.
According to the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau, Roxas Boulevard will remain car-free for fitness activities every Sunday until June 30, promoting a healthier and more active lifestyle among Manila residents.
