A place where Cabuyenos can walk, jog, exercise and engage in an active lifestyle together.
That was the goal of the city government of Cabuyao, Laguna as it officially started its own "Car-Free Sundays" program for its residents.
Starting last May 17, a portion of the access road to the Cabuyao Athletes' Basic School (CABS) will be closed to motor vehicles from 4:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. every Sunday.
The road closure covers the portion from the main entrance in Barangay Banaybanay to the office of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO).
The "Car-Free Sundays" program of the Cabuyao City government was legislated through City Resolution No. 269, Series of 2026 that was passed last May 12.
According to the resolution, the establishment of a car-free zone along the CABS Access Road aims to ensure the health of its constituents "by promoting walkability and encouraging residents to walk more and develop [a] healthy lifestyle."
The program is also in line with the goals of the IHELP (Industry, Health, Education, Livelihood, and Protection) platform of Mayor Dennis Hain.
"The Car-Free Sunday at CABS can provide opportunities for enhanced livelihoods and economic development in the nearby areas contributing to tax revenue for local governments, enhancing the city's urban attractiveness and promotes tourism as well," the ordinance stated.
Cabuyao City is the first local government unit (LGU) in the province of Laguna to legislate "Car-Free Sundays," which aims to provide safe spaces where residents can safely exercise and spend time outdoors.
Several cities in Metro Manila, as well as Baguio, Iloilo, and Davao cities, have already implemented car-free initiatives, providing safer spaces for exercise and community activities.
