The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) remains committed to making the skies over the Philippines safer.
In a statement, the CAAP said it is in the process of preparing for the integration of an updated version of Communications, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) system on September 30.
The agency noted that the integration serves as a means to sustain the ongoing enhancement efforts for the Air Traffic Management System (ATMS) through the installation and execution of a new software iteration facilitated by Thales. This initiative is in line with their existing software support and maintenance agreement.
According to CAAP, the software is priced at US$1.5 million and it will take approximately one hour to install.
"These advancements will result in more efficient air traffic operations, reduced delays, and an overall smoother experience for both airlines and passengers," the CAAP said in a statement.
CAAP and Thales guarantee that there will be minimal disruption to numerous flights as the installation and software updates are planned during periods of low passenger traffic.
The CAAP added that while the communication, navigation, and surveillance equipment for air traffic operations is functioning properly, they have put in place additional measures and emergency procedures to ensure the safety of flights and passengers. This includes extending the time gap between departing flights.
This proactive approach, CAAP said, may result in some delays, but it is necessary to maintain safety standards.
A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) will be issued to inform airlines and stakeholders 48 hours prior to the upgrade.
