The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and the New NAIA Infra Corp (NNIC) discussed critical airport operations and infrastructure projects to boost aviation status during a meeting between officials of the two organizations last week.

“Both organizations explored potential collaboration towards human capital development to address the country's growing demand for air navigation professionals and emergency service staff,” CAAP said in a statement.

Points of concern discussed in the meeting include enhancements to airport taxiways, weather and lighting systems, and air traffic control facilities aimed at revitalizing the country's main gateway to world class standards.

NNIC President and CEO Ramon Ang affirmed their support to CAAP for its hosting the upcoming 59th Conference of Directors General of Civil Aviation Asia and Pacific Regions (DGCA59), in Cebu this October by becoming one of the event's platinum sponsors.

The private consortium also expressed its support behind CAAP's extensive training programs for Air Tradfic Service (ATS) and Air Navigation Service (ANS) personnel, in order to guarantee a consistent stream of capable, skilled, and proficient controllers and air navigation personnel.

The aviation regulator said that NNIC has also pledged to contribute to the refurbishment of the Civil Aviation Training Center (CATC) in Merville, Pasay City.

The renovation will include upgrades to the training facilities, including the purchase of new tower simulations.

CAAP said that these improvements are necessary to facilitate more efficient operations and to enhance the volume of aircraft traffic at NAIA.

CAAP and NNIC also acknowledged that there is a need for improvements in Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) training facilities and firefighting equipment in order to improve airport safety and readiness for emergencies.

According to CAAP, ARFF is a consistent component of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Safety Audit.

Enhancing training resources and equipment would greatly enhance the overall safety level of the aviation sector in the Philippines.

Among the CAAP officials who attended the meeting were CAAP Director General Manuel Antonio Tamayo, CAAP Deputy Director General for Operations Edgardo G. Diaz, Deputy Director General for Administration Danjun Lucas, and ATS chief Marlene Singson.
