Amid worries that the current crisis at the San Juanico Bridge may drive up prices of basic goods and commodities in Eastern Visayas, the local government of Borongan City, Eastern Samar will form a task force with members from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Borongan Chamber of Commerce and Industry to address its potential impacts.

In a statement, Borongan City Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda said the creation of the special task force will focus on monitoring the supply and prices of goods and products in the market.

The task force will also be tasked to provide solutions to problems that may arise due to the load restriction imposed on vehicles crossing the San Juanico Bridge.

The situation has been affecting the delivery of supplies and goods from the Leyte and Samar sides.

Agda added they will continue collaborating with suppliers and retailers for appropriate solutions and actions to ensure a smooth distribution of goods, regulate price increases, and minimize the economic impact.

“We will keep the public posted about developments on this matter,” Agda assured residents.

The city government reported that several business establishments in Borongan City have temporarily closed their operations due to the bridge issue.

Among these establishments are the Crispy King and Estong Lechon Manok, which source their supply from their production site in Ormoc City.

There was also a buildup of fuel buyers in gasoline stations throughout the city.
