Setting

By the 2040s, the world had plunged into a severe energy crisis caused by the depletion of fossil fuels, the devastating effects of pollution, global warming, and rampant overpopulation, and the resulting cascading problems. These problems have led to widespread poverty, economic stagnation, and social unrest. In a desperate attempt to escape the bleak realities of their deteriorating world, people turn to the OASIS, a vast, immersive virtual universe that has become the center of modern civilization.

Originally designed as a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), the OASIS evolved far beyond its initial concept. It became a fully functioning virtual society where people work, study, and socialize, all through visors and haptic technology such as gloves and bodysuits. Despite its gaming roots, the OASIS now encompasses everything from education and commerce to entertainment and politics. It has even developed its economy, with its digital currency considered one of the most stable in the real world.

The OASIS was created by the reclusive genius James Donovan Halliday, founder of Gregarious Simulation Systems (formerly Gregarious Games). Over the years, it expanded into a vast universe consisting of 27 different sectors, each containing a multitude of unique worlds and zones catering to various interests—from fantasy and science fiction to historical recreations and cyberpunk metropolises. The platform became a refuge for people seeking adventure, knowledge, or simply an escape from their harsh realities.

However, when he passed away, Halliday left behind a mysterious and thrilling challenge. His will was revealed in a pre-recorded video message announcing that he had hidden an Easter egg somewhere within the OASIS. The first person to find it would inherit not only his immense fortune but also full ownership and control of the OASIS itself—an asset valued at trillions.

To claim the prize, a player would have to uncover three hidden keys—Copper, Jade, and Crystal—and use them to unlock three secret gates. Halliday's revelation ignited a global frenzy, drawing in solo treasure hunters, known as "Gunters" (short for egg hunters), as well as massive corporate entities, most notably the ruthless telecommunications conglomerate Innovative Online Industries (IOI). IOI, with its vast financial resources, aimed to seize control of the OASIS and exploit it for profit through aggressive monetization.

Despite the initial fervor, five years passed without a single key being found. The once-intense search had faded into obscurity, with many beginning to doubt whether Halliday’s challenge was even solvable. That is, until an unassuming teenager named Wade Watts changed everything.

Plot

Wade Watts, an eighteen-year-old orphan, resides in Oklahoma City within the "stacks," a poverty-ridden district where trailer homes are precariously piled atop one another. He shares his cramped space with his neglectful Aunt Alice, along with several other tenants she takes in to make ends meet. Life in the real world is grim, but Wade finds solace in the OASIS, where he operates under the avatar name "Parzival."

An avid Gunter, Wade dedicates himself to researching Halliday’s life, obsessively studying his journal, Anorak’s Almanac, which is filled with clues and references to 1980s pop culture—Halliday’s greatest passion. After meticulously analyzing one of Halliday’s riddles, Wade makes a breakthrough: the first key is hidden on the planet Ludus, which coincidentally houses his virtual high school.

Following the clues, he discovers a recreation of the legendary Dungeons & Dragons module Tomb of Horrors. Inside, he faces an AI-controlled Acererak, a formidable undead demilich, in a game of Joust. By defeating Acererak, Wade earns the Copper Key and becomes the first player in history to appear on the contest’s global scoreboard, instantly catapulting him to fame. As he exits the tomb, he encounters Art3mis, a renowned Gunter and blogger, who had also deduced the location but had not yet won the key. Though instantly smitten with her, Wade keeps his competitive edge.

His next challenge takes him to the planet Middletown, a virtual recreation of Halliday’s childhood home. There, he must complete two trials: playing through the classic video game Dungeons of Daggorath in Halliday’s old bedroom and perfectly reenacting the role of Matthew Broderick’s character in WarGames. Wade successfully clears the First Gate, as do Art3mis and his best friend Aech shortly afterward. Wade’s newfound fame brings lucrative sponsorship deals, allowing him to earn a living within the OASIS. However, it also draws the unwanted attention of Nolan Sorrento, the ruthless head of IOI’s operations.

Sorrento attempts to bribe Wade into joining IOI, but when Wade refuses, IOI escalates its tactics to murder. They bomb his trailer, killing his Aunt Alice and other residents, though Wade, having been away at the time, narrowly escapes. Forced into hiding, he relocates to Columbus, Ohio—home to both IOI and Gregarious Simulation Systems—where he assumes a new identity, "Bryce Lynch." Secluding himself in a secure apartment designed for hardcore OASIS users, Wade dedicates himself entirely to the hunt, though his relationship with Art3mis deteriorates when he confesses his feelings, prompting her to distance herself.

Months later, Art3mis uncovers the Jade Key, reigniting the contest. Wade follows a clue leading him to the planet Archaide, where he plays a perfect game of Pac-Man on a mysterious arcade machine. His reward is an unassuming quarter that remains in his inventory, its true purpose unknown. With guidance from Aech, he later secures the Jade Key on the planet Frobozz by solving Zork and using a Cap’n Crunch whistle to replicate a 2600-hertz tone. However, IOI, now aggressively accelerating its hunt, locates the Second Gate and rapidly secures the Crystal Key. Worse, Shoto, another top Gunter, reveals that IOI has murdered his partner, Daito.

Parzival discovers the Second Gate hidden in a Blade Runner Voight-Kampff machine and completes Black Tiger, earning a powerful mecha as a reward. He retrieves the Crystal Key on the planet Syrinx after playing 2112 by Rush, which reveals a final clue. Meanwhile, IOI locates the Third Gate inside Halliday’s stronghold, Castle Anorak, on the planet Chthonia, sealing it with an impenetrable force field.

Determined to stop them, Wade infiltrates IOI’s headquarters by intentionally getting arrested and hacking their internal system. He uncovers damning evidence of IOI’s crimes, including the murders of Daito and other dissenters. After escaping, he releases this data to the public and organizes a massive assault on Castle Anorak, enlisting thousands of players to storm IOI’s defenses.

During the climactic battle, Parzival and his allies engage in a brutal mecha fight against Sorrento’s Mechagodzilla. Though IOI seems poised to win, Wade’s hidden artifact—the quarter from Pac-Man—grants him an extra life when IOI detonates a doomsday device, annihilating every avatar in the sector. Wade enters the Third Gate with no competition left, vowing to share his winnings with his friends.

Inside, he plays Tempest, reenacts Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and ultimately retrieves the egg within Adventure, the first video game to contain a hidden Easter egg. His victory grants him absolute control over the OASIS, making him the world’s most powerful individual. Sorrento and IOI’s executives are arrested for their crimes.

Returning to the real world, Wade finally meets Art3mis, whose real name is Samantha. They share a moment and kiss, and for the first time, Wade feels content without logging into the OASIS.
