It's high time the government should step in to address the problem of overloaded and oversized trucks plying Leyte's main roads.
That was the stance of Leyte senior board member Carlo Loreto, who recently filed a proposed ordinance to regulate the passage of overloaded trucks, most commonly carrying construction materials.
During a recent media interview, Loreto said his office has received complaints from motorists about damaged roads due to frequent passage of large trucks.
Not only do these oversized and overloaded trucks pose a serious risk to other motorists, they also contribute to the faster deterioration of roads in the province, he added.
“The challenge is the implementation side and that is why we must study based on data from the provincial engineering office and even from the DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways),” Loreto told reporters.
Data from the DPWH show that there are 926.52 kilometers of road classified as national highways.
“We have to map out details taking into consideration the load capacity for each barangay, municipal, provincial and national road since these roads have different thickness,” he added.
The proposed ordinance is one of the priority measures of the provincial board this year, according to Loreto.
Roads in Leyte have been frequently used by large trucks transporting hauled sand and gravel for construction activities in different parts of Eastern Visayas Region.
