PAGBILAO, Quezon - The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) here has lined up activities in line with the celebration of National Correctional Consciousness Week (NACOCOW) slated from October 24 to 30.
With the theme "Magkaisa, Magtulungan, Magdamayan sa Covid-19 ay Labanan," the celebration aims to support the cause of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) and raise public consciousness on their plight amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
JO2 Joefrie Anglo, Community Relation Services Officer, said in a recent interview with Kapitolyo Para Sa Tao, NACOCOW activities include the following: online chess tournament, online quiz bee, modern folk dance competition, training, and online livelihood bazaar.
"Naglunsad ang BJMP ng livelihood bazaar upang maturuan sila na magkaroon ng kabuhayan paglabas nila ng BJM," Anglo continued.
To spare the jail facilities from the threat of Covid-19, PDL implemented electronic visitations or "E-dalaw" to enable PDLs to communicate with theirloved ones, Anglo added.
Meanwhile, JO1 Elmer Jay Nerbes, Mental Health Officer of BJMP Quezon District Jail, conducted a seminar for selected Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL).
The activity aims to educate and assist PDL in understanding the most common mental health illnesses, managing them, and helping loved ones who are suffering from mental illness.
BJMP said that the pandemic is hurting general health and producing anxiety and tension, among other obstacles. However, it teaches us how to be kinder to one another, cope or overcome challenges, thrive, and survive to live for the future.
The observance is mandated by Proclamation 551 issued by then-President Fidel Ramos that declares every last week of October as National Correctional Consciousness Week.
