Bishop Antonio Maralit, leader of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Pablo, is now set to play a wider role in the Church's drive towards evangelization.

Pope Leo XIV recently appointed Maralit, along with Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, as a member of the Vatican Dicastery for Communications.

The Dicastery for Communication plays a crucial role in the Church’s mission, coordinating how the Catholic Church communicates with the faithful and the wider world.

Its responsibilities range from managing Vatican media outlets to promoting ethical and effective communication strategies globally.

Maralit, who was installed as Bishop of San Pablo in 2024, is expected to bring with him years of experience in the field of social media communications in the Catholic Church.

He currently serves as president of the Office of Social Communications of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC).

The Office of Social Communications oversees the management of Radio Veritas Asia, which is headquartered in Quezon City and works with the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communications to promote Catholic Church teachings.

Maralit also became the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on Social Communications chairman in 2019.

"The inclusion of these distinguished leaders from Asia underscores the universal nature of the Church,” Fr. John Mi Shen, Executive Secretary of the Office of Social Communications of the FABC and Program Director of Radio Veritas Asia, was quoted as saying.

"It reflects Pope Leo XIV’s commitment to ensuring that all regions of the Church are heard in shaping its communications strategy," Fr. Mi Shen added.
