BINANGONAN, Rizal – To prevent young skateboarders from figuring in freak adventure hobby accidents, the local government established a controlled but conducive sports facility where skateboarders can hone their skills.

According to municipal administrator Russel Callanta Ynares, the recently-opened skateboard park in Barangay Calumpang of this lakeshore municipality is primarily designed to provide the youth with a safe and orderly place to show off their skills in skateboarding.

Skateboarding, which is a popular recreational activity among the youth, not only in this town but everywhere in the country and abroad, involves doing tricks and maneuvers using a skateboard.

Ynares said the establishment of the very first park for skateboarders complete with ramps and other accessories paves the way for the development of the physical activity of the young people of the town and even non-residents, giving them good health and keeping them away from vices and other unproductive activities.

The park’s inauguration last Jan. 10 was attended by municipal officials led by Mayor Cesar Ynares, his wife, Dr. Rose Martha-Callanta Ynares, Municipal Administrator Ynares, Sangguniang Kabataan Federation President Moses Alfonso Cerrero, Barangay Calumpang Chairman JM Paralejas, and members of the Binangonan Skate Crew.

“This skatepark, to be a symbol of freedom for the youth, freedom from vices, freedom from anything that influences or pulls them down,” Ynares further averred.

However, he emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of skateboard players, stating, “I hope that the safety of our skateboard players is protected by proper safety gear.”

Meanwhile, Mayor Ynares expressed optimism during the inauguration organized by All Binangonan Artist Association (ABAA). He expressed his hope that skateboarding would be included in the sports programs of the Department of Education (DepEd) competitions. This, he believes, would help showcase the town and its youth in the realm of this particular sport, skateboarding.

Local bands Chicosci, Kamot Pusa, Agos, Android 18, and SWAP performed during the inauguration. A skateboard competition was also held under the supervision of the Binangonan Skate Crew, safety officers of the municipal government, and the barangay office.
