The City of Biñan, Laguna has been declared the champion of the Men’s Basketball Tournament after beating Dasmarinas City at the 2024 Local Government Unit Games Season 3 held from June 27 to August 16 at the Alonte Sports Arena, Biñan City. But one wonders, what does this have to do with governance?

Basketball, or sports in general, promotes teamwork, discipline, and mutual respect for one another.

“Ako'y naniniwala na itong sports ay nakatulong sakin para maging mabuting tao at makatulong sa ating mga kaibigan,” said Biñan City Vice Mayor Gel Alonte, who also played for the basketball team.

It is not new to Biñanenses to see their vice mayor playing sports, especially basketball.

In fact, Alonte was a former member of the Laguna team in the Palarong Pambansa during his high school days.

That is why to share his passion for the game, Alonte spearheads various programs championing sports in the city such as training and clinics.

“Ang gusto ko makapaghubog ng youth na matulungan natin umasenso hanggang pagdating ng panahon ay magbigay ng karangalan di lang sating lungsod kundi sa buong Pilipinas," the vice mayor said.

According to Alonte, his sports programs also aim to keep the youth active for health and wellness and away from vices.

But more importantly, Alonte said that developing team camaraderie is the main goal.

To show how basketball affects governance in Biñan, Alonte highlighted City Ordinance No. 16-2022, giving benefits and perks to Barangay Micro-Business Enterprises.

This ordinance has gained the Presidential Recognition for Outstanding Development Partners on Improving Business at the 2024 Presidential Awards for Outstanding Micro Small and Medium Enterprises and the Presidential Recognition for Outstanding Development Partners held last July 10.

“Dito po sa Biñan, ang iniba namin sa ibang lungsod, kami ay nagkakaisa at pinagaaralan maigi kung anong mas makatutulong pa sa ating mga kababayan tulad ni Atty. Arriba (Business Permit and Licensing Office head) at Konsi Alba (City Councilor Toppe Alba) na talagang nagpush nito,” Alonte explained.

“Kami po one family, one team para sa kabutihan,” he added.
