The Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) recently crowned Charles Jarret P. Bernil from Biliran Province State University - College of Engineering as the regional champion of its 28th edition.
At just 18 years old, Charles completed his senior high school education with a diploma from the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) track at Tucdao National High School located in Kawayan, Biliran Province.
In a competitive two-hour quiz, he outperformed 20 other freshmen from the region, achieving an impressive total score of 26.
In second place was Heart Eveange Lhynne Mae E. Progella, an 18-year-old freshman pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at Northwest Samar State University.
Heart Eveange graduated from Calbayog City National High School, also with a STEM diploma.
The third-place winner was April Anne K. Dublas, an 18-year-old student from Visayas State University - Main Campus, who completed the six-year secondary curriculum at Philippine Science High School (PSHS) - Eastern Visayas Campus.
As recognition for their achievements, the top three winners received plaques and cash prizes, which amounted to PhP 10,000 for the champion, PhP 8,000 for the second prize, and PhP 6,000 for the third prize.
In addition, the coaches of the top scorers were presented with certificates and tokens for their efforts.
All other participants, along with their coaches, received participation tokens and certificates as well.
Charles Bernil will represent the Eastern Visayas region in the national finals of the PSQ, scheduled to take place in Metro Manila on December 5, 2024.
Eastern Visayas had previously secured its first PSQ national championship in 2004 with Jane Lois E. de Veyra, a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science student from the University of the Philippines-Visayas.
The 28th PSQ Regional Championship took place on November 8, 2024, concurrently with other regional competitions across the Philippines.
This annual nationwide event aims to discover the country’s most talented young statisticians, testing their knowledge gained from the secondary education curriculum among college freshmen in all 17 regions of the Philippines.
The PSQ was initiated in 1992 by the former National Statistics Office (NSO) in collaboration with the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI).
