Motorists plying the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) were promised that the toll rate hike recently imposed at the expressway equals a more convenient travel along the toll road.

MOTORISTS plying the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) can rest assured that the toll rate hike recently imposed at the expressway meant a more convenient travel along the toll road.

That was the claim of NLEX Corp. spokesperson Atty. Romulo Quimbo following the implementation of additional toll fees for motorists using the NLEX system starting May 18.

Open-system users (from Balintawak to Bocaue) will have to shell an additional P2.00 for Class I vehicles (cars, vans and jeeps); P3.00 for Class 2 vehicles (buses and light trucks); and P4.00 for Class 3 vehicles (heavy trucks).

For end-to-end travel (up to Mabalacat City, Pampanga), Class 1 vehicles will be charged P6.00; Class 2 P14.00; and Class 3 P16.00.

"Yung ating pangangasiwa [ng expressway], 24/7 po iyan. In other words, araw-araw may maintenance works na ginagawa diyan," Quimbo explained during Wednesday's edition of "OpinYon News Ngayon" with Catherine Go.

"Alam po ninyo, ang maglinis lamang ng 100-kilometer na expressway ay hindi po biro," Quimbo said.

"Napakahalaga po sa amin na maging ligtas ang biyahe [ng mga motorista]," he added as he noted that their response to accidents have to be made between five to 10 minutes to reduce the chances of traffic buildups.

Aside from its road improvement work, NLEX Corp. has also undertaken a massive rehabilitation of several bridges along the expressway.

Chief among this is the renovation of the 5-kilometer Candaba Viaduct, which was built in 1977 and considered to be one of the longest bridges in the Philippines.

“Kapag may nangyari po dito sa Candaba Viaduct na alam po natin na major artery, tiyak po na mahihirapan ang ating mga motorista,” Quimbo said.
