Just in time for the Lanzones Festival, the island of Camiguin is set to reopen its airport and accept tourists as soon as October 25.
TRANSPORTATION Secretary Arthur Tugade today presided in the inauguration of Camiguin Airport following the completion of its upgrade and rehabilitation works, declaring that the facility is now ready to welcome tourists starting October 25.
Some of the areas of the gateway that underwent improvement were the Passenger Terminal Building which was expanded to serve at least 200 passengers from the previous capacity of 66.
The project also includes a new Bay Fire Station Building, Administration Building, as well as a completed asphalt overlay for the runway slope.
After the inauguration ceremony, Tugade attended a contract signing between the LTFRB and the Camiguin Transport Cooperative (CAMTRANSCO).
A total of 35 public utility jeepneys (PUJs) will be utilized to provide free rides for the healthcare workers, essential workers and authorized persons outside residence (APOR) in Camiguin.
Once operation, Camiguin will be the first province in Northern Mindanao to open its doors to local tourism since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
As of October 19, the Department of Tourism says 3,071 or 67% of Camiguin's 4,591 tourism workers have already been fully vaccinated, expecting to reach 100% by the end of October.
"With a healthy and 100% protected workforce, we are optimistic that we can provide greater focus on the task of recovery, and bring the fun back to tourism in Camiguin," tourism secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said.
Tourists are required to have received full Covid-19 vaccination as well as register through https://cleancamiguinqr.com/ .
Those coming from Luzon must show negative test results and arrive in Camiguin within 72 hours from the time the RT-PCR tests were done. While those from Visayas and Mindanao must arrive within 48 hours.
