The Bureau of Immigration's (BI) new cutting-edge document examination laboratory at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport is expected to boost the bureau's efforts to secure the country's borders.

Equipped with the state-of-the-art Video Spectral Comparator, the new facility, opened on June 19, bolsters the BI’s capabilities in detecting fraudulent documents.

The new equipment provides advanced forensic inspection, including the analysis of watermarks, microprints, and other security features critical in identifying counterfeit documents.

"The opening of this laboratory is a crucial step in our ongoing efforts to combat document fraud. With this new laboratory, our ability to intercept fraudulent documents is significantly enhanced, ensuring greater security at our borders," BI Anti-Fraud Section Chief Marivic Beltrano said in a statement.

"We've already made major interceptions, and this laboratory will undoubtedly contribute to even more successes," she added.

The establishment of this laboratory is part of a broader initiative, supported by the Australian government, which donated the sophisticated equipment and provided specialized training for BI personnel.

"This new laboratory exemplifies our dedication to public service and national security. We are deeply appreciative of the Australian government’s support and proud of our Anti-Fraud Section's tireless efforts," BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco said.

BI remains committed to safeguarding the nation's borders, enhancing the travel experience, and ensuring the rule of law is upheld, he added.

The BI’s forensic document examination laboratories are now operational in its Main Office, Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), Clark International Airport, Davao International Airport, and Mactan-Cebu International Airport. These facilities play a vital role in maintaining the integrity of the immigration system.
