Teachers of an elementary school launched a “Bayong ng Pag-asa” to aid teachers and residents who were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Inspired by the community pantries that have sprouted all over the country, teachers of Tayabas West Central School II have also set up their own community pantry “Bayong ng Pag-asa” starting Monday (June 21).

The bayongs distributed by teachers contained essential goods such as rice, canned goods, noodles, faceshields, facemask, first aid kit, and school supplies.

These were purchased through monetary and in-kind donations from the teachers, General Parents and Teachers Association (GPTA), members of the alumni, other stakeholders, and the Sangguniang Barangays of Lita and Mateuna.

“We wanted to ease the burden of the parents of our 150 learners,” Lea Cosico, head teacher of TWCS II, said.

Cosico added that‘Bayong ng Pag-asa”exemplifies the Filipino bayanihan spirit during this challenging time of Covid-19.

“There is no such thing as big or small donation. This is the rallying spirit behind the bayanihan efforts that range from educating young minds, leading the way in social responsibility for its students,” Cosico explained.

Gerlie Ilagan, OIC – Schools Division Superintendent of Tayabas City, lauded the move as an example of the Filipino bayanihan spirit during this challenging time of Covid-19.

“We cannot defeat the Covid-19 pandemic alone. We need the support and cooperation of everyone,” Ilagan said.
