Some old-timers believe the "sun halo" is a sign of bad luck, which makes the phenomenon especially ominous in the light of the continuing Covid-19 pandemic.

IN what maybe another case for the existence of unidentified flying object (UFO) riding-aliens, residents in the eastern part of Bohol have witnessed a bright ring around the sun for an hour on Tuesday (August 3).

While meteorologists and some scientists were quick to say that the cause was a rare optical and atmospheric phenomenon known as "sun halo", some observers however, were not discounting the possibility that the image could have been caused by spaceship-riding alien beings.

“Malaki po ang paniwala namin na iyong image na iyon ay galing sa isang napakalaking sasakyan ng mga alien na dumaan sa may lugar namin. Sapagkat kung sun halo lang po iyon ay dapat hindi ganoon ang histura,” a local resident said.

Experts say a sun halo is a large ring or circle of light around the sun or moon formed due to high clouds which develop at 20,000 feet, and are composed of ice crystals.

Halos are usually seen when six-sided ice crystals have a random orientation.

Sunlight is dispersed through the ice crystals, and the light is refracted, creating the image of a halo.

However, not everybody is happy with the strange phenomenon.

For some old-timers, they believe the "sun halo" is a sign of bad luck, which makes the phenomenon especially ominous in the light of the continuing Covid-19 pandemic.

“It is a sign of bad omen. Most of the time, it tells about the coming of a typhoon and other disasters,” a resident quoted her grandmother as saying.

The province has already suspended inbound sea and air travel for two weeks due to the latest surge in Covid-19 cases.

"This is to give local government units time to drive an aggressive program to vaccinate the senior citizens, those with comorbidities and to support our OFWs who need to be deployed abroad quickly," Governor Arthur Yap said.
