KALIBO, Aklan — With the dwindling number of regional and domestic flights at Kalibo International Airport (KIA) has sparked concerns among registered concessionaires and businesses operating within its premises. With economic recovery hanging in the balance, stakeholders are calling for immediate intervention from the Sangguniang Bayan of Kalibo.
Representing various business interests at KIA, petitioners have also appealed to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) for a public hearing to address the significant reduction in weekly seat capacity and limited flights on the Manila-Kalibo route.
"The decline in regional and domestic flights is alarming, jeopardizing Kalibo's economic recovery and future," the petition states.
Since the onset of the pandemic, commercial airlines have been steadily reducing weekly seats from Manila to Kalibo, leading to a sharp drop in domestic flight operations. This decline poses a threat to the local economy, putting numerous jobs at risk.
While passenger demand at Kalibo Airport has understandably decreased, the resurgence of domestic travel and air passenger volume at Godofredo P. Ramos Airport in Caticlan, Malay, Aklan paints a contrasting picture.
Caticlan Airport now handles around 40 flights daily from Manila, Cebu, and Clark, showcasing a stark difference in flight frequency compared to Kalibo.
In light of these challenges, authorities must take proactive measures to revive air travel in Kalibo. Addressing the decline in flights is not only crucial for the economic vitality of the region but also for sustaining livelihoods dependent on airport operations.
As stakeholders come together to voice their concerns, the Sangguniang Bayan of Kalibo and CAAP needs to heed their call for action.
By working collaboratively, we can pave the way for the revitalization of Kalibo Airport and ensure a brighter future for the town and its residents.
