Just two days before the new year, the 93rd Infantry "Bantay Kapayapaan" Battalion clashed with remnants of the New People's Army (NPA) in Barangay Canhandugan, Jaro, Leyte last December 30.

The encounter, lasting over five minutes, reminds the public of the ongoing struggle between government forces and insurgent groups, raising concerns about the safety and stability of local communities.

During the skirmish, military personnel seized a .45 caliber pistol, three improvised explosive devices, and additional war materials, underscoring the serious threat these groups pose.

One soldier sustained injuries and was promptly transported to the hospital, where he remains in stable condition, reminding the public of the real risks faced by those in uniform.

This incident was sparked by vigilant citizens reporting suspicious armed individuals on their farms, showcasing the importance of community involvement in combating terrorism.

Lt. Colonel Charlie L. Saclot, the battalion's commanding officer, credited local residents for their cooperation in promptly notifying the authorities.

This cooperation is crucial in undermining terrorist activities, suggesting that a united community can effectively repel such threats.

Brigadier General Noel A. Vestuir praised the troops’ swift action, reinforcing the critical message that the NPA continues to falter due to community awareness and support.

His call to arms isn’t merely against the NPA but also extends to the public, urging them to reject any association with terrorist groups to eliminate fear in their communities.

This ongoing conflict raises questions about the effectiveness of government measures to mitigate the risk of terrorism.

The emphasis on amnesty and rehabilitation for insurgents is a hopeful gesture but raises concerns about the broader implications for national security and justice. Community resilience remains vital in the fight against these determined adversaries.
