A 69-year-old American national was arrested on Sunday, December 21, after a violent confrontation inside a church in Mayorga, Leyte, that left a local pastor injured and worshippers shaken.
The suspect, identified only by his first name, “Mike,” allegedly entered the Bible Baptist Church in Poblacion Zone 3 during an afternoon service.
According to police reports, the incident began when he confronted Pastor Lex, 54, over a matter involving the church’s newly acquired vehicle.
Witnesses said that when the pastor attempted to calm the distraught foreigner, the suspect struck him on the back of the head.
The situation quickly escalated when the American pulled out a knife and attempted to stab the pastor.
One member of the congregation narrowly avoided harm as others moved to intervene.
Responding officers from the Mayorga Municipal Police Station arrived at the scene around 3:15 p.m. after receiving an alarm call.
Police subdued the suspect and confiscated the weapon, ensuring the situation did not worsen.
Pastor Lex sustained minor injuries and was treated at a local medical facility. Authorities later reported that he was in stable condition and expected to recover.
The suspect was taken into custody and is now facing charges that include physical injury and attempted homicide, according to law enforcement.
Investigators are also looking into whether he has a history of violent behavior in the area.
Local officials condemned the incident, emphasizing the need to protect religious leaders and communities.
Residents described the attack as alarming and unprecedented for their town.
The case is set to be forwarded to the Leyte provincial prosecutor’s office for formal filing of charges, and police have assured the public that justice will be pursued.
Authorities also reiterated that measures are being strengthened to safeguard churchgoers in the region.
