In a bid to prevent aviation-related incidents such as a bird strike, the Daraga, Albay municipality has enacted a municipal ordinance to ban any activities involving pigeons near the Bicol International Airport (BIA).
The local government of Albay has implemented proactive measures that prohibit any activities involving pigeons within the three-kilometer radius of the BIA.
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has expressed appreciation to the local government for their efforts in improving aviation safety.
The CAAP is the operator of BIA and other airports in the Bicol Region, including Legazpi airport.
CAAP said that the Sangguniang Panlalawigan ng Albay has passed a regulation that prohibits the breeding, release, and keeping of pigeons for either commercial or personal purposes within a specific zone.
Violators of the ordinance will face penalties ranging from P1,500 to P2,500, along with the immediate confiscation or permanent ban of pet pigeons within the restricted area.
CAAP has praised the Albay LGU for their dedication to upholding safe and efficient operations at Bicol airport through the implementation of measures that safeguard both public and aviation infrastructure.
The aviation regulator also said that the passage of ordinance is a significant step in reducing the risk of bird strikes at Bicol airport and gratefully recognizing the importance of the local government initiative and its proactive efforts.
