The island town of Alabat, Quezon, has achieved a noteworthy feat: it is now home to the world's largest wind turbine generator (WTG) outside of China.
This recently installed 8-megawatt (MW) wind turbine generator, provided by Envision Energy, features a rotor with a diameter of 182 meters.
Its hub sits at a height of 105 meters, and the blades extend a considerable 90 meters.
Significantly, this installation features cutting-edge, typhoon-resistant technology and a segmented tower assembly.
These innovations represent a first for the wind energy industry.
The installation represents a major achievement for Alternergy, successfully navigating considerable logistical hurdles.
These included transporting enormous equipment by barge, building a jetty on an island, obtaining necessary permits, and collaborating with various stakeholders.
"This initial wind turbine generator is a truly significant milestone. There were numerous challenges, but our determination and strong partnerships allowed us to push boundaries and bring renewable energy to the forefront, especially during this time of global uncertainty,” Knud Hedeager, president of Alternergy Wind Holdings Corporation, said.
The Alabat Wind Project, set atop the mountains of Alabat and Quezon municipalities facing the Pacific Ocean, will have a total of eight WTGs with a combined capacity of 64 MW.
Upon completion later this year, it will be among the first wind projects to finish under the Marcos Administration’s Second Green Energy Auction.
Alternergy's commitment to a renewable energy future gains strength with this latest accomplishment, as the company prepares to add seven more wind turbine generators in the near future.
