Aid for Kanlaon victims underway

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has extended over P6.7 million worth of aid to families affected by the recent eruption of Kanlaon Volcano.

DSWD Spokesperson and Assistant Secretary for Disaster Response Management Group Irene Dumlao reported that as of 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 12, the agency had delivered P6,731,626 worth of humanitarian assistance.

This aid consists of family food packs and non-food items, including sleeping kits and hygiene kits.

The DSWD has also prepositioned 1,508,038 family food packs nationwide to support local government units (LGUs) affected by calamities.

Dumlao assured that the department is ready to provide further assistance should the Kanlaon Volcano erupt again.

As of Thursday morning, DSWD’s Disaster Response Operations Management, Information, and Communication reported that 654 families or 2,314 individuals are taking refuge in six evacuation centers in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental.

Additionally, 2,825 families or 9,328 individuals are staying in 11 evacuation centers in La Castellana, Negros Occidental.

DSWD continues to work closely with partner LGUs to ensure that the needs of those affected by the volcanic eruption are met.

Defense Secretary and NDRRMC Chairperson Gilbert Teodoro Jr. has instructed the evacuation of approximately 87,000 affected residents to ensure their safety amidst the ongoing volcanic activity.
