Robbery gone wrong?

The quiet town of Purok Crossing, Barangay Cabungahan in Villaba, Leyte was shaken by the brutal death Leyte town’s municipal agriculture officer at around noon of June 9.


Reports said the victim, Marcelino Combate, 52, and also a Catholic lay minister, was on his way home after serving two masses in the villages of Bagabao and Mataloto, when waylaid by still unidentified lone suspect.


Sources said when Combate reached Purok Crossing, the suspect fired multiple shots at the lay minister with a caliber .45 pistol . Victim died on the spot.


The suspect quickly left the scene after taking the victim’s sling bag containing an undetermined amount of cash, mobile phone, and ostia (sacramental bread for communion).


As of this writing, the motive and identity of the suspect still has yet to be determined.


Locals are speculating the incident must have been a case of a robbery gone wrong. Combate was believed to have resisted and fought with the suspect.
