KALIBO, Aklan — As the province grapples with the effects of El Niño, the Metro Kalibo Water District (MKWD) stepped up efforts to mitigate its impact on water consumers in the province.

With water sources dwindling due to prolonged dry spells, communities are facing challenges in accessing potable water.

MKWD recently sought the assistance of Gov. Jose Enrique Miraflores to rechannel the Aklan River, ensuring the free flow of water near the district's pumping stations.

According to MKWD General Manager Engr. Lydio Ureta, declining water levels in the river have adversely affected several wells and reduced the capacity of pumping stations in Tigayon Kalibo and Palale Banga.

Conserve Water

In response, MKWD urges consumers to conserve water during the dry spell and prolonged El Niño period.

Simple measures like monitoring water bills, reusing water for flushing toilets, and fixing leaks can significantly contribute to water conservation efforts.

Ureta also advises against watering plants during the daytime to prevent low water pressure and maximize water usage efficiency.

To further address water scarcity, MKWD has initiated distribution line projects across Kalibo, New Washington, Balete, Batan, and Banga. These projects aim to stabilize water distribution and ensure consistent access to safe and potable water for the province's residents.

With 48 years of operation under its belt, MKWD remains committed to providing affordable and reliable water services to over 25,000 household connections.

Despite the challenges posed by El Niño, the district's dedication to serving its communities remains unwavering.
