Former secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Benhur Abalos has called for comprehensive support for farmers, emphasizing the need for expanded crop and financial insurance, during the Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas press briefing here Saturday.
Abalos and other administration senatorial candidates were in the province for a campaign rally expected to be attended by national and local officials.
He underscored the urgency of enhancing financial assistance and insurance coverage, which could benefit farmers and their families, ensuring stability and resilience in agriculture.
“Food security is critical to our country’s future. We must maximize this potential to help them thrive and ensure food on every family’s table,” he added.
Abalos urged local government units to support the elimination of middlemen and create a stable market for agricultural products, ensuring that farmers receive fair prices for their goods.
He said there is a need to push for institutionalized financial support for farmers, mainly through accessible and affordable credit programs to help them invest in better seeds, technology, and equipment.
“Our national and local leaders must make food security and farmer support a top priority in their development plans,” he added. (PNA)
