Key destinations in Western Visayas attracted more than 7 million for local and foreign tourist arrivals, the Department of Tourism in Region 6 (DOT-6) unveiled.
Last year, in the Top 10 of the list were Malay, Aklan, home to the renowned Boracay Island, which listed two million tourist arrivals.
Iloilo City followed with 886,000 visitors, most of who celebrated its Dinagyang Festival and rich culinary scene. Bacolod City, known as the City of Smiles, ranked third with 780,000 tourists.
Sipalay City in Negros Occidental welcomed 218,000 visitors, while Roxas City in Capiz had 152,000 arrivals. Nueva Valencia in Guimaras saw 98,000 tourists, followed by San Carlos City in Negros Occidental with 85,000, and Kalibo in Aklan with 79,000. Kabankalan City in Negros Occidental reported 77,000 arrivals, and Carles in Iloilo province rounded out the list with 70,000 tourists.
Significant Impact
Presented by DOT-6 Assistant Regional Director Phoebe Zelie C. Areño on July 9, these figures reflect significant impacts on local businesses.
Increased tourist traffic has boosted revenue for hotels, restaurants, and local attractions. The influx has also prompted infrastructural developments and job creation in the hospitality and service sectors.
Residents reacted positively, noting tourism's economic benefits and cultural exchange.
However, concerns about sustainability and the strain on local resources were aired. Business owners, particularly in the hospitality and food industries, were optimistic, anticipating continued growth and prosperity driven by sustained tourism efforts.
The DOT-6 report underscores the vital role of tourism in regional economic development, highlighting the need for balanced growth that benefits visitors and local communities.
