A 6.1 magnitude quake shook Calatagan in Batangas and was felt in a wide area of Luzon. The cause was tectonic arising from the movement of plates in the area of the West Philippine Sea.

A tectonic quake of magnitude 6.1 jolted a wide section of Luzon at 5:50 a.m. today but there were no report of damage to infrastructure nor deaths or injuries.

The quake was felt at intensity 4 in Calatagan, Batangas; Intensity 3 in Quezon City, Pasay City, Pasig City, Tagaytay City, Mendez, Amadeo and Alfonson in Cavite and Obando, Bulacan.

It was also felt at Intensity II in Abucay, Bataan; Gapan City, Nueva Ecija; Castillejos, Zambales; Mandaluyong City; City of Manila, Makati City and Tanay, Rizal.

Cause of quake

The cause of the quake was plates going through the West Philippine Sea under Luzon along the Manila trench so the quake was deep. And because it is deep, even if it was strong, it is not expected to cause damage and it will not cause a tsunami, Phivolcs told Teleradyo.

Instrumental Intensities:

Intensity IV- Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro

Intensity III- Plaridel, San Ildefonso and Malolos City, Bulacan; Guagua, Pampanga; Tagaytay City; Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro; Batangas City; Olongapo City, Zambales; Gumaca, Quezon.
