The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office 8 has reported that a total of 539 centenarians in Region VIII have been granted benefits under the Centenarian Program, which has been in effect from 2016 to 2024 across the Eastern Visayas.
The program operates in accordance with Republic Act 10868, also known as the Centenarians Act of 2016, which provides a monetary incentive of P100,000 and a certificate of recognition from past presidents of the Philippines to qualifying centenarians.
According to recorded data, there are 34 centenarians from the province of Biliran, 63 from Southern Leyte and Northern Samar, 79 from the province of Samar, and 92 from Eastern Samar.
The highest number of centenarians resides in Leyte province, boasting a total of 199 beneficiaries, highlighting the region's rich demographic diversity.
Among the beneficiaries, the gender distribution exhibits 126 men and 404 women, indicating a significant disparity that aligns with global trends of longevity among women.
Over the years of program implementation, the DSWD, in collaboration with various Local Government Units (LGUs) in the region, has successfully recognized and supported centenarians, emphasizing their contributions to societal advancement.
Looking ahead, the management of the Centenarian Program is set to transition to the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC) starting in 2025, paving the way for further enhancements in services for the elderly.
In connection with this transition, the Expanded Centenarians Act, known as RA 11982, will allow for cash incentives to be provided to octogenarians (aged 80-85) and nonagenarians (aged 90-95), thereby expanding the government’s support for its senior citizens.
The initiative reflects a growing commitment to honoring and nurturing the elderly population, ensuring they receive the recognition and benefits they rightfully deserve.
