Five private colleges and universities in the province of Laguna have been granted a three-year autonomous and deregulated status by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
In a statement, CHED Chairperson Prospero de Vera III said these colleges and universities are among the 92 higher education institutions (HEIs) in the Philippines that have been granted this status.
These include the Lyceum of the Philippines - Laguna; Colegio De San Juan De Letran - Calamba; Mapua Malayan Colleges Laguna; Saint Michael's College of Laguna; and University of Perpetual Help System - Laguna.
For autonomy, De Vera cited the HEIs’ performance in professional board examinations, employability rates, curriculum alignment with industry demands, and global linkages and engagements, among others.
“The new guidelines include global partnerships and international engagement with top universities all over the world. As the landscape of higher education continues to evolve, CHED will ensure that Philippine HEIs remain competitive on both national and global scales,” he added.
The other HEIs, meanwhile, secured deregulated status after meeting “high standards” with good quality performance and program results.
According to CHED, being granted autonomous status allows HEIs to launch new courses/programs in the undergraduate and/or graduate levels including doctoral programs in areas of expertise without securing a permit/authority from CHED.
They are also allowed to increase tuition fees without securing a permit from CHED, provided that they fully comply with the existing CHED policies, standards, and guidelines on increases in tuition and other school fees.
Autonomous HEIs are free from CHED’s monitoring and evaluation activities while complying with the submission of requested data for CHED’s data gathering and updating of its management information systems and projects.
