The five missing local rescuers’ bodies were found after they rescued residents in flood-struck Barangays Tigpalas and Samias in exchange for their own.

Authorities confirmed today that five missing local rescuers had drowned while responding to flood-hit villages in the town of San Miguel.

San Miguel Mayor Roderick Tiongson said that the rescuers belonged to the Bulacan Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).

These PDRRMO rescuers were on a mission to save lives in Barangays Tigpalas and Samias. They were deployed at around 4 a.m. to rescue the residents. However, they had lost contact when the flooding in these areas reached more than 6 feet high, Inquirer reported.

Gov. Daniel Fernando verified the rescuers' deaths and said the bodies had been transferred to a funeral home.

Fernando added that the rescuers used a boat after their truck broke down on their way to their mission. Due to the flash flood, a wall collapsed and hit them causing them to drown.

“Assistance will be provided to the family of the deceased rescuers,” Fernando said.

Around 2,000 people are staying in evacuation centers as some areas are still flooded in the province, particularly 49 barangays.

A salute and respect to our fallen heroes who risked their lives to save the citizens of Tigpalas and Samias. Their actions and bravery will not be forgotten, and their sacrifices make them our modern heroes in the face of disaster.
