CAMP VICENTE LUKBAN, Catbalogan City, Samar – In a ceremony that resonates with hope and determination, the 8th Infantry “Stormtroopers” Division of the Philippine Army publicly lauded the 42nd Infantry “Tagapagtanggol” Battalion for its commendable efforts against Communist Terrorist Groups (CTGs) during its nearly two-year stint as an Operational Control (OPCON) unit.
The send-off celebration, conducted at the Headquarters Tactical Operations Group (TOG) 8 in Tacloban City on January 16, 2025, was not just a formality. It symbolized the hard-fought victories and sacrifices made by the 42IB, which has played a pivotal role in dismantling the insurgent ranks in Eastern Visayas.
One defining moment for the battalion was the successful operation that led to the dismantling of the ELCON Platoon, a significant faction within the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee. Accomplished on March 3, 2023, this victory was marked by the recovery of high-powered firearms and the apprehension of key insurgent figures.
Maj. Gen. Adonis Ariel Orio, commander of the Joint Task Force Storm and 8ID, couldn’t hide his pride in this battalion’s achievements. His awarding of the Meritorious Merit Medal and Command Plaque was a testament to the battalion’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace and stability in a region long plagued by violence.
In his speech, Maj. Gen. Orio emphasized the comprehensive role that the 42IB has played—not merely in neutralizing threats but in infusing communities with the hope of a peaceful future. “You have strengthened the foundation of long-lasting peace and sustainable development,” he asserted, underscoring the broader impact of their mission.
This recognition also serves as a motivator for other military units fighting against insurgency. The strides made by the 42IB, evident in their community support operations, demonstrate that the change is possible.
As they transition back to the 9th Infantry Division in Bicol, the legacy of the Tagapagtanggol Battalion is one of resilience and purpose. Their story should embolden future military actions and inspire confidence in the government’s ongoing efforts to end local armed conflict. The battle for peace continues, and the groundwork laid by the 42IB will not be forgotten.
