In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a significant chapter unfolded in the ongoing battle against insurgency as three New People’s Army (NPA) rebels met their end in an encounter with soldiers in the village of Torocadan, San Joaquin town in Iloilo. This encounter, orchestrated by the 61st Infantry Battalion (61IB) of the 301st Infantry Brigade (301IBde), marks a decisive blow against the forces of terror and instability that have long plagued the region.

The operation, which saw soldiers engaged in a focused military campaign, was met with fierce resistance from approximately 20 members of the Southern Panay Front, Komiteng Rehiyon - Panay (SPF KR-Panay) under the leadership of Nahum Camariosa alias Bebong. Despite the odds stacked against them, the brave men and women of the 61IB stood their ground, demonstrating unwavering courage and commitment to restoring peace and order to their community.

The exchange of fire, which lasted for about 20 minutes, showcased the determination and resolve of our soldiers in the face of adversity. Through their swift and coordinated efforts, they succeeded in repelling the enemy and inflicting a significant blow to their ranks, leaving three rebels dead and forcing the remainder to retreat in disarray.

The recovery of four M-16 rifles, an AK-47 rifle, three bandoleers, a commercial radio, and nine backpacks containing the rebels’ personal belongings underscores the magnitude of the threat posed by insurgent groups operating in the region. These weapons of war, intended for the perpetration of violence and terror, now serve as tangible evidence of our soldiers' triumph over adversity and their unwavering commitment to upholding peace and stability.

Crucially, the successful outcome of this operation would not have been possible without the invaluable support and cooperation of the local community. Brig. Gen. Michael Samson, commander of the 301IBde, aptly acknowledged the crucial role played by locals in providing timely information, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in the fight against insurgency.

In the aftermath of this decisive encounter, let us pay tribute to the fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our homeland. Their bravery and selflessness will forever be etched in the annals of history as a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Filipino people in the face of adversity. As we honor their memory, let us renew our commitment to building a future defined by peace, prosperity, and progress for all.
