TACLOBAN CITY – Almost seven in every ten mobile phone and internet users in Eastern Visayas, or at least 2.58 million ICT users, have fallen victim in various forms of cyber incidents, the Philippine Statistics Authority reported on Tuesday.

Based on the result of the National Information and Communications Technology Household Survey (NICTHS), an estimated 66.9 percent of individual ICT users in Eastern Visayas, aged 10 years old and above, have experienced text scams, hacking, phishing, and cyber bullying.

The survey, an initiative of the PSA and the Department of Information and Communications Technology, was done from December 2023 to February 2024 covering 44,415 household samples in the region.

Results of the survey indicate that incidents related to cybersecurity in the region in the last five years more than doubled compared from 32.9 percent incident in 2019 to 66.9 percent in 2024.

Of those who become victims of cyber incidents, only two out of every 100 of them were reported to the authorities.

PSA regional director Wilma Perante said Eastern Visayas has 1.2 million households or 3.86 million individuals aged 10 years and above have access to the digital, where it is 97.9 percent used in accessing the social media for long-distance communication with friends and relatives.
