For 137 San Pedrenses who joined the Labor Day Job Fair at the SM Center San Pedro last May 1, that day will mark a new chapter of their lives: they are now among the ranks of the “obrerong Pilipino.”
According to data provided by the San Pedro City Public Employment Service Office (PESO), that number represents 45.21 percent, or almost half, of the 303 applicants (146 males and 157 females) who took their chances of being employed at the Job Fair organized by the city government on that day.
A total of 35 companies and manpower agencies from San Pedro City and beyond offered employment opportunities for San Pedrenses during the event, which was held in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the provincial government of Laguna, Rotary Club of Metro San Pedro, and SM Malls.
“Isang patunay ito ng tuloy-tuloy na suporta ng lokal na pamahalaan para sa kabuhayan at trabaho ng mga mamamayan,” the San Pedro City PESO said in its official Facebook page.
Other services
Aside from employment opportunities, the city government of San Pedro also offered various other services for job applicants during the Labor Day Job Fair.
"A total of 50 applicants were able to avail of our free massage services, while 19 applicants were able to avail of our resume printing services and 22 applicants availed of the medical services provided by the City Health Office," officials told OpinYon Laguna.
DOLE, along with other government agencies such as the Social Security System (SSS), Pag-IBIG Fund, PhilHealth and the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) also participated in various booths to help prospective employees with the requirements for their new jobs.
"The DOLE Help Desk was able to address one complaint from an applicant, while a total of 80 applicants availed of the combined services of SSS, Pag-IBIG and TESDA [Technical Education And Skills Development Authority]," officials added.
