“Dayaw’s 11th Season is vital in reminding our young generation, especially those who spend endless hours on gadgets and mobile games, to be physically active as well as experience and learn from the world outside,” said House Deputy Speaker and Antique Representative Loren Legarda.
The award-winning documentary series “Dayaw is back for season 11 with a focus on the energy, competitiveness, and sportsmanship of Filipinos.
Taking the spotlight on Filipino traditional games, sports, and dance, the new season titled “Kakaibang Sigla: Our Vital Energy” premiered this week on the ABS-CBN News Channel.
“Dayaw’s 11th Season is vital in reminding our young generation, especially those who spend endless hours on gadgets and mobile games, to be physically active as well as experience and learn from the world outside,” said its host, House Deputy Speaker and Antique Representative Loren Legarda.
The six-part docu series, shot pre-pandemic, starts with the games we played as kids such as taguan, patintero, piko, and luksong tinik.
This season also explores on Ifugao’s famous annual punnuk tug-of-war ritual, which was recently listed as an important intangible heritage by UNESCO.
Filipino martial arts that include arnis, silat, and eskrima will be covered in a two-part special titled “Tikas at Lakas.”
Finally, watch out for the graceful last episode of “Sayawang Pinoy” which features the treasure trove of folk and indigenous dances.
According to Legarda, traditional games, dances, and martial arts instill important values in Filipinos that enable them to persevere despite uncertainties, overcome challenges, and thrive in the direst circumstances.
With the Olympics nearing its end and the Philippines assured of multiple medals, a first since the Los Angeles 1953 Olympic Games, Filipinos are once again interested in taking up sports.
Though other than just aiming to win, active sports and traditional games teach valuable skills of precision, mental acuity, teamwork, and sportsmanship that are just as important.
Hence, it is important to teach the youth about them.
“Dayaw,” a production of ANC and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), is a concept of Legarda, NCCA's Dangal ng Haraya Patron of Arts and Culture awardee.
Watch it every Thursday at 6 pm starting August 5 (Thursday) on ANC on cable and the ANC Facebook page.
