CANDID as she is, Vice President Sara Duterte again made herself the most talked-about government official – at least for a week, over an announcement that many thought was an indication of a major political decision.

On Tuesday last week, Duterte hinted at running for public office next year, just in time for the 2025 midterm election which is still three years away from the expiration of the term as Vice President of the country.

Is she resigning to run for congresswoman and snatch the House leadership from Speaker Martin Romualdez? Amid speculations coming from all directions, the vice president neither said yes or no.

She instead insisted that there was no mention of her resigning from her post in 2025.

"Narinig ko na sinabi ng aking kapatid, si Mayor Baste [Duterte], at ng aking mas matandang kapatid, si Congressman Pulong [Duterte], na hindi sila tatakbo. Baka hindi sila tatakbo sa susunod na eleksyon, kaya’t narito ako sa inyong harap dahil mangangampanya ako sa inyo dahil tatakbo ako sa susunod na eleksyon," Duterte said in a mix of Tagalog and Visayan dialects.

After the program, Duterte was swarmed by local reporters who threw direct questions answerable either by a yes or otherwise.

“Oops, did not say anything," said Duterte even as she clarified speculations of her making another major political decision similar to what she did in 2022 when she opted to run as the running mate of then-presidential candidate Ferdinand Marcos.

"I think 'yung confusion is piecemeal ang appreciation ng mga tao doon sa sinabi ko. Ibig sabihin, tinatanggal nila ang isang linya para sabihin kung ano ang gusto nila na interpretation," Duterte was quoted as saying, adding that she and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. have yet discussed anything about the 2025 election.
