Pasig City’s Emerald Avenue is now a shining beacon for motorists – and an example on how roads in Metro Manila should also be illuminated at night.

PASIG City’s Oplan Kaayusan strikes again and illuminates Emerald Avenue like never before prompting motorists and pedestrians asking for better lighting and maintenance on other major roads.

While Emerald Avenue in the Ortigas Central Business District has always been a fairly well-lit area, what Mayor Vico Sotto has done to it is lauded to be a standard for road illumination for the rest of the country.

In addition to the new 93 LED streetlights, the road markings were refreshed, and minor repairs like the sidewalk tiles have been made.

Earlier this year, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) installed streetlights along España Boulevard from Welcome Rotonda to Morayta.

“1.9 kilometers ang haba,” Manila City mayor Isko Moreno said on social media. “Thank you, Secretary Villar and the DPWH! Manila, God first!”

Despite being delayed by the pandemic, motorists and pedestrians now feel safer plowing these streets at night following the completion of the project.

In January, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Benhur Abalos pushed the DPWH to improve lighting fixtures on major thoroughfares in Metro Manila.

“Public safety is our utmost priority,” he said. “Without the street lights, our motorists and commuters are in danger. Part of road safety is making the road visible to all its users.”

DPWH Undersecretary Robert Bernardo agreed but was also concerned about thieves stealing street lights and other electrical fixtures.

“We will continue cooperation with the MMDA and the LGUs to make sure that all the street lights are working,” he said.
