The decision to place Metro Manila and four provinces under GCQ with heightened restrictions was reached following a meeting of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) on Thursday, as the Department of Health reported 12 new additional cases of the "more transmissible" Delta variant in the country.

METRO Manila and four other provinces will be placed under general community quarantine (GCQ) "with heightened restrictions" starting today (July 23) up to July 31, according to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.

In a press briefing, Roque said the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro will also be placed under heightened restrictions.

The decision was reached following a meeting of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) on Thursday, as the Department of Health reported 12 new additional cases of the "more transmissible" Delta variant in the country.

The Philippines has recorded 47 cases of the more transmissible Delta variant so far.

Meanwhile, there is no report yet on whether quarantine categories in other areas in the country will also be changed. (ONT)
