The “Araw ng Maynila” is a five-part online lecture series that will explore topics about the first resistance against Spanish invaders, the history of Intramuros, and some of the historic sites and structures in the city.

THE City of Manila is celebrating its 450th founding anniversary.

With this, the “Araw ng Maynila” lecture series was launched last week and it will last until the end of June.

It was the product of a collaboration between the Department of Tourism, Culture and Arts of Manila (DTCAM), the National Quincentennial Committee, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), and the Intramuros Administration.

The “Araw ng Maynila” is a five-part online lecture series that will explore topics about the first resistance against Spanish invaders, the history of the walled city of Intramuros, and some of the historic sites and structures in the city.

Lecturers include historians Ambeth Ocampo of the Ateneo de Manila University History department, Michael Charleston Chua and Jose Victor Torres of the De La Salle University History department, and Ian Christopher Alfonso and Gerwill Cruz of NHCP.

Lectures scheduled include:

•June 3 (Thursday) at 1 PM: “The First Resistance Against Spanish Invasion of Luzon” with Ian Christopher Alfonso of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines

•June 5 (Saturday) at 1 PM: “Ang Kamatayan ng Bayaning Walang Pangalan, ang Pagsibol ng Isang Lungsod” with Michael Charleston Chua of the De La Salle University History department

•June 11 (Friday) at 1 PM: “Manila’s Historic Sites and Structures in the Survey Files of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines” with Gerwill Cruz of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines

•June 24 (Thursday) at 10 AM: “Manila: The Rise of Ciudad Murada from Lumang Maynila” with Jose Victor Torres of the De La Salle University History department

•June 24 (Thursday) at 1 PM: “Manila in the Past Tense” with Ambeth Ocampo of the Ateneo de Manila University History Department

These lectures will be streamed live for free at the DTCAM’s page as well as on the NQC, NHCP, DepED, NCCA, and DFA pages. (EFO)
