FINDING ways on how to ease traffic and ensure safety of commuters, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) today opened to the public the southbound Edsa- Buendia footbridge.
MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos said the footbridge would help ease traffic in the area as well as make the Edsa busway travel more seamless and safer for commuters.
It is also expected to provide pedestrians safe access to and from the new loading/unloading bay for the bus carousel in the area.
Abalos added it is the 125th footbridge that the MMDA had built all over Metro Manila which served a total of approximately three million pedestrians daily.
"Buendia is one of the busiest intersections in terms of pedestrian traffic and having this overpass for them to use will make their trips easy, secured, and safe," Abalos said.
The pedestrian footbridge will be connected to the existing MRT pedestrian overpass crossing Edsa Southbound which will serve those who are going to Makati Central Business District and vice versa, as well as commuters coming from Bonifacio Global City.
It can be accessed from Makati Avenue or the southbound exit of the MRT-Buendia Station.
He added that construction of footbridges in Tramo, Taft, and Roxas Boulevard for the EDSA Bus Carousel is already underway.
Assistant Secretary Eymard Eje, the OIC-general manager of the MRT 3, expressed his support and gratitude to the MMDA on the inauguration of the said footbridge.
"The Buendia footbridge would give comfort and safety to the EDSA Bus Carousel passengers," Eje said.
In another development, Abalos said they are eyeing the possible re-imposition of the number coding scheme because of the increased traffic flow, which slowed down traffic movement or travel speed in major thoroughfares.
"Travel speed along EDSA from Roxas Boulevard going to Monumento is slower at 19 kilometers per hour (kph) now that we are under Alert Level 2 compared to 23 kph during the ECQ,” he said.
