Christmas has become, for many Filipinos, one of those few chances for us to unwind, relax, forget the harsh routine of everyday life, and spend a few precious moments with friends and family.

And yet, as we sit down after the midnight mass and share Noche Buena with the people who matter to us, let us not forget the real lesson this occasion has brought – and will continue to bring – to all of us.

That lesson? Selflessness.

Consider the very selflessness of God, who promised (and delivered on that promise) to offer his Only Son as a sacrifice so that all of us may be saved from the pain of spiritual death and become human beings who are worthy of being called his children.

Imagine that!

If God, in his almighty power, is willing to reach out to us through the ultimate sacrifice that we have come to celebrate every end of the year, who are we to set aside our selfishness and reach out to others?

Don’t we always say that generosity is the real spirit of Christmas? And in these times when just surviving everyday life has become something of a challenge, the real spirit of Christmas should inspire us to think of others, not just during this occasion, but every day of our lives.

It is in the same spirit that we should really consider seriously our choice of leaders this coming midterm elections next year. The spirit of Christmas challenges us to think, not what can these candidates offer to us and us alone, but what they can offer for our country and our communities at large.

The spirit of Christmas calls to us to set aside our greed, our selfishness and our apathy and instead be considerate, generous citizens – Filipinos who wish for and act for genuine, inclusive change for all of us.
