P20-M worth of fake copper masks seized in Binan, Laguna; manufacturer says fake masks could "compromise" public health.

BINAN, Laguna- LOCAL health authorities are warning the public to be more cautious when purchasing copper face masks which have been touted as effective against the COVID-19 virus.

This, after the National Bureau of Investigation recently seized P20 million worth of fake copper masks and other coverings at an establishment in Binan City, Laguna.

Police also arrested an unidentified Chinese national and four employees who were allegedly distributing the masks.

Aside from the face masks, operatives of the National Bureau of Investigation – National Capital Region also retrieved several packages of counterfeit face filters.

NBI operatives said the raid was triggered by a complaint filed by Copper Mask Philippines, the manufacturer of the face mask.

Copper Mask Philippines warned the public that using fake face masks is dangerous as buyers have no guarantee whether these products actually pass through quality control.

Copper masks have gained popularity recently after claims that the materials used on them can kill bacteria and viruses.

The Department of Health (DOH) had clarified that although not approved as a medical grade, copper masks can still be used as face coverings to prevent the spread of COVID-19. (JV)
