The former mayor of Calauan, Laguna had been suffering from "pre-existing conditions" and may have also contracted the COVID-19 virus, according to prison officials.

Sanchez was sentenced to reclusion perpetua for the 1993 rape-slay of University of the Philippines Los Baños student Eileen Sarmenta and the torture-killing of her companion Allan Gomez.

CONTROVERSIAL former Calauan, Laguna mayor and convict Antonio Sanchez died today at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) complex, NBP officials announced Saturday (March 27).

NBP spokesperson Gabriel Chaclag said Sanchez was found unresponsive in his cell at 7:00 a.m. today by his cellmates.

He was rushed to the NBP hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Sanchez was sentenced to reclusion perpetua for the 1993 rape-slay of University of the Philippines Los Baños student Eileen Sarmenta and the torture-killing of her companion Allan Gomez.

In 2019, reports of Sanchez’s possible release from prison due to a law that expanded good conduct credits led to a public outcry.

Prior to his death, Sanchez had pre-existing conditions such as chronic kidney disease, hypertension, gastroenteritis, prostate problems, and asthma, Chaclag said.

He was also suspected of contracting the COVID-19 virus last year as the number of people infected with the disease rose inside the facility. (ONT)
