The two suspects who were killed in a shootout along SLEx-Calamba City were reportedly involved in kidnap-for-ransom and robbery operations targeting Chinese nationals who work in Philippine offshore gaming operations (POGOs) in Metro Manila.
THE two men who were killed in a shootout along the South Luzon Expressway (SLEx) in Calamba City, Laguna Thursday afternoon (June 3) were members of a robbery/kidnapping syndicate.
PNP-Calabarzon Regional Director P/BGen. Eliseo Cruz said the two suspects, which are still unidentified as of press time, were reportedly involved in kidnap-for-ransom and robbery operations, mostly targeting Chinese nationals who work in Philippine offshore gaming operations (POGOs) in Metro Manila.
The syndicate was tagged as behind the kidnapping of a Chinese national at the Aseana City in Paranaque City, using a white Toyota Hi-Ace van, according to police reports.
Operatives of the Regional Intelligence Division – Anti-Carnapping (RID-Ancar) immediately conducted a patrol in the southern part of the National Capital Region until they spotted the target vehicle heading to the expressway at the Silangan exit in Cabuyao City, Laguna.
However, instead of slowing down, the suspects fired at the policemen, resulting in a firefight along the expressway that led to the death of the two suspects.
The report did not mention the supposed kidnap victim, while Cruz said police are still verifying the identities of the slain suspects. (JV/with report from Sol Luzano)
